Recharging with the Fabulously Bad.
My creativity for the last few months, and brain cells in general, has been drained well-below empty.
Lately, both have felt as if they were oozing out my brain through my ears.
I finally had a chance to get off my proverbial hamster wheel of grad school, work, and dead-end relationships with men to sit down, recharge, and search for the creativity I had misplaced.
I was in need of a bad 80s movie.
Being a child of the 70s, growing up in the 80s, I have great fondness and severe nostalgia for such things as neon clothing and excessive accessorizing.
Coincidently, Netflix delivered, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, for weekend viewing. PERFECT.
I loved every minute of this fantastically bad classic.
The stunning asymmetry of this past decade’s fashion made me gasp with elation. I had forgotten about wearing one big earring in one ear and one small earring in the other, wearing one cuffed earring, wearing one glove – either sequenced or lace, all while wearing one bandana tied around an ankle of choice. It was breathtaking.
Everything back in the 80s was excessive – especially the accessories. Everyone sported multiple versions of the same accessory – and wore them all at once. SWATCH watches (of which, I had three), hand-cuff toggle belts, different colored socks – tucked over the pants, of course. It all brought a tear to my eye.
As the credits rolled, I felt the pulse of my creativity start to beat again. Although, faint, the 80s once again have defibrillated my mojo.
Now to defibrillate my love life mojo… foreign films ? Paris J’Taime, perhaps.
Well, in the meantime, I am off to buy a SWATCH on eBay.

Swatches were great! You're right about the excess of the 80s - I never thought of it like that before. Remember slap bracelets? You could wear 3 of those at the same time too. Until they got banned from school ha.

I really just bought a Swatch off of eBay - LOVE IT.
Remember the rubber bracelets too, that came in all different colors???
And you would wear those a hundred at a time???
We need to bring back the 80s - just not 80s hair!

OK, - love, love, love "Breakin 2" movie and i often dreamed of being that girl sent to Jilliard and instead was drawn to the street life of hard core breakin' mixed with classic dance skill and raw talent.. and dance wars and being the one girl dancin'... ehhe Just kidding, but i must admit the movie was on recently and I could not stay away...i can think of some more... and go on forever! Can't remember the name, but the movie of 7 teens trying to make it in NYC and dancing for a living and bringing their BOOM box and making money to pay the rent,,, remember that one?

Afterall, we were in many dance wars back in the day...Vertex, the showdown with me swinging Steve's keys, and who can forget your stint at Shannon's Corner? Or.....the classic, "Go back, go back" at our summer cottage scene.

You should start dressing your husband like the guys from Breakin 2...with the long coat, hat and multiple belts...oh, and don't forget the cuff earring!

You know I've always want to try wearing one big earring on the other ear while a small one on the other. I am planning to wear that this new year's eve because I will be waring an 80's dress.

The 80s are totally coming back! I just bought leg warmers! I am even starting to wear leggings again (don't tell Kaz or SlinkyChic)...

As a child of the 70s, who also grew up in the 80s, I too owned some SWATCHes, played with my 'tubular' Fisher Price toys, rollerskated to the Xanadu soundtrack, watched Saturday morning cartoons, and relished listening to & loving 80s music {Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, etc,}. In fact, 2008 was a great year for music & nostalgia because I was fortunate to see two of my favorite groups/bands in concert!
